Hello friends, welcome again to our new session. Here we are going to cover one of the most important topics from seed science subject. We have also covered this topic under the Seed Science section. It related this topic to minimum seed standards where we will cover the germination percentage of different crops. So before starting the topic, let’s see what question IBPS AFO asked in the IBPS examination-

Q} What is the Minimum seed germinate% of the wheat crop? (IBPS AFO Mains 2019-20)

  1. 85
  2. 70
  3. 75
  4. 80
  5. 90

The correct answer is 85%.

Agriculture Current Affairs 2021 For Competitive Exams

Now, let’s see the explanation for the above question- starting with Cereals and Millets-

  • For Paddy, the minimum seed germination percentage is 80%
  • For pearl millet (Hybrid and variety) the minimum seed percentage is 75%
  • Finger millet(ragi) has the value of 75%
  • Sorghum (Hybrid and Variety) has a minimum seed germination percentage of 75%
  • Whereas for maize inbred its 80% and for maize others, it’s 90%
  • Minimum criteria for barley and oats both are 85%
  • The minimum germination percentage of wheat is 85% (IBPS AFO 2019-20)

Coming to minimum germination percentage for pulses

  • The value for Red gram (Hybrid and Variety) is 75%
  • For Black gram, the value of minimum germination percentage is 75%
  • And for Green gram its 75%
  • For Bengal gram its 85%
  • For Horse gram, the minimum value is 80%
  • For peas its 75%
  • And for French bean and Field bean its 75%

Now minimum germination percentage for Oilseeds-

  • For Groundnut, it is 70%
  • For sunflower (Hybrid and Variety) its 70%
  • For sesame, the minimum seed percentage is 80%
  • For castor, it’s 70%
  • And for soybean, it’s 70%

In the Case of Fire crops for hybrid cotton, its 65% and cotton variety is 65%

 The minimum germination percentage for vegetables is as follows-

  • For Ash gourd, it’s 60%
  • For bitter gourd (Hybrid and Variety) it’s 60%
  • For Bottle gourd, it’s 60%
  • And for Ridge gourd (Hybrid and Variety) it’s 60%
  • For Snake gourd, it’s 60%
  • For watermelon (Hybrid and Variety) it’s 60%
  • For cucumber (Hybrid and Variety) its 60%
  • For pumpkin (Hybrid and Variety) its 60%

Now, the minimum germination percentage for fruits and vegetables-

  • For Brinjal (Hybrid and Variety) it’s 70%
  • For Chilli its 60%
  • For okra, it’s 65%
  • For tomato (Hybrid and Variety) its 70%
  • For beans its 70%

Now taking specifically the cole crops-

  • For Cabbage its 70%
  • For Cauliflower its 65%
  • For knol knol its 70%

Minimum germination percentage for Bulb crops- Onion (Hybrid and Variety) its 70%

Minimum germination percentage for root crops-

  • For Carrot (Hybrid and Variety) it’s 60%
  • For Beetroot its 60%
  • For Radish (Hybrid and Variety) its 70%
  • For turnip (Hybrid and Variety) it’s 70%
  • For cluster beans its 70%

Now the minimum criteria for forage crops-

  • For Sun hemp its 80%
  • For Daincha it’s 70%
  • For Lucerne, it’s 80%

The minimum germination percentage for some miscellaneous crops-

  • For Palak, it’s 60%
  • For Spinach its 70%
  • For Papaya its 60%
  • For Moringa it’s 70%
  • And for coriander its 65%
